Why Should We Grow Our Own food?

Have you ever thought about where your food is coming from? For most of us, our food is sourced by large farms on the mainland, and growing our own food seems old fashioned and unnecessary. However, we have somehow found ourselves lucky enough to live in Hawaii, which means we are sitting on an absolute gold mine when it comes to home farming.

You might ask, what is the point of growing food when I can just buy it? You may say that it seems like too much work, but home farming has so many obvious and hidden benefits if you give it a try.

The weather in Hawaii can be absolutely beautiful, and we have a very special climate that is perfect for growing so many types of fruits and vegetables. We even have wild fruit trees growing in random places! Why not take advantage if this awesome opportunity?

Eating home grown foods will be organic! Growing your own food will also help you spend less on groceries, encourage you to eat better, reduce the amount of processed foods you eat, and can expand the variety of vegetables you eat. Although, thats not the only way that home farming can help your health. Home farming is also a great way to get outdoors, get some fresh air, Vitamin D, and exercise!

Home farming is not only healthy and a great investment, it is also fun! It is a great hobby that can tear you away from the TV and electronic time. Growing food is joyful and rewarding! The accomplishment you feel and the passion that will blossom from growing your own food is incredible.

If you believe home farming will be impossible for you due to space, don’t worry. You do not need to have a large area of land and fertile soil. Food can be grown right out of planters that are as small as 3 x 1 feet. At my home, my family built our own 6 x 2 feet planters and we are growing our own foods right in our backyard. All you need are the planters, dirt, seeds, and water. You will also need sunshine, and Hawaii has plenty of it!
