Cowboys Basketball Team Wins in Kauai

The Kohala boys basketball team traveled to Kauai from December 28-31st for a three day tournament where they performed very well.  Kohala won the Kapa’a Tournament by defeating Waimea High, Kauai High, and defending KIF champion Kapa’a High in the final. The other teams playing in the tournament were Ka’u and Seabury(Maui).

The Cowboys opened the tournament on Wednesday against Waimea where they got off to a very slow start. Flying in early that morning may have played a factor, but regardless the Cowboys found themselves down 31-20 at halftime. The second half told a different story. The Cowboys surged behind big scoring nights from Seniors Chris Roxburgh and Weston Cazimero to take the lead late in the third quarter. Kohala continued to use full court pressure to create steals and ran away with a 66-49 win.

The following night proved to be an even tougher game against Kauai High School.  The Cowboys were able to build a lead in the second half to go up 49-43 with less than two minutes to play. However Kauai created turnovers and got a few big defensive stops to tie the game up at 49 with less than 20 seconds to play. Then with 4 seconds left Cazimero received a pass into the low post and hit a 5 foot jumper to give Kohala a 51-49 win.

In the championship game Kohala was tested for all 4 quarters by a scrappy Kapa’a team. It was an intense game, but the Cowboys prevailed once again 59-46. Freshmen Hana Carvalho had 16 points and Junior Makani Kuali’I followed with 15.

The trip to Kauai was a first time experience for almost the whole team. They had a lot of fun traveling all over the island including trips to Waimea Canyon and surf spots along the Hanalei coast.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls opened up their season against Laupahoehoe on Wednesday. The girls won 55-15 and the boys won 49-7. The next game for the Cowgirls will be at Honoka’a on Friday and the Cowboys will travel there on Saturday.
