Kohala Student Credit Union Begins New Year In Training

Kassie Kometani, Reporter

On August 25, the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union held a conference for the high school credit unions on the Big Island. The 3 schools that attended were Kohala, Konawaena, and Kealakehe. Representing Kohala was Summer Murai, Pono Giron,  Arvi Realista and Kassie Kometani. The conference was held at the King Kamehameha Hotel.

Officers and board members from each school’s credit union came together to learn about HCFCU. Some things we learned included federal regulations that each credit union must obey and the duties of all officers and board members. We also had a meeting to plan for our school year, such as brainstorming the community service ideas that we could do. A fun activity that encouraged the three school’s credit unions to come together was coming up with ways to recruit new members. We split into 3 groups with mixed schools and came up with interesting ideas to encourage students to make an account.

The conference was run by Kenneth Shaw who is our youth activities director for the student credit union. Also in attendance was James Takamine, the HCFCU president.
