Powerpuff Girls world premiere….again

I…. I’m not sure what I can say about this premiere.

For those of you who don’t know or heard of The Powerpuff Girls, it was an original cartoon series that existed in 1998 of three sisters who has amazing superpowers and defended the city from criminals, super villains, and monsters.  The series was created by Craig McKraken and lasted till 2005, when it was unfortunately cancelled.

Recently, talk was made about a revival of the series, even previewing a promo. In this revival, the animation and humor seems almost entirely different. And if you are a fan of the original show, you are probably not so keen on this version.

The revision was released on January 20, 2014, as well as a bunch of new episodes of various shows. Like the original series, it opens with an introduction of how the Powerpuff girls were made. Sugar, Spice, and everything nice. With the secret ingredient, chemical X. However, after that, it jumps immediately to the narration of Tom Kenny, without giving a title of what the episode is, like they normally do. I’m not sure if this is because this is meant to be a “one-episode” thing, but it does irritate me that they are trying to draw away from the original shtick.

Speaking of drawing away, instead of pertaining to the original 2D art style, Powerpuff Girls has driven towards a new age of CGI. This would have been fine and understandable, but it isn’t only the animation they changed. The mechanics and movement of the characters just seems so off and goofy, entirely drifting away from the shows original design. It’s almost like the only thing they took from the original series was the name of the show and the name of the characters.

Back to the storyline, it begins gun-ho. No explanation of who is who and what is what. I believe it is because they already assume that the viewers already know that the Powerpuff Girls is a show that has been out of commission for nearly 10 years. I’m receptive, but they don’t need to start out with their royal flush, ease me into this thing!

What really makes the storyline confusing is the characters personalities. If you’ve seen the original Powerpuff Girls, you would have a strong grip on everyone’s characters. In the new series, it seems that everyone is just plain ridiculous and has no common sense. Apparently the Professor seems odd ended, including a new secret past story of being a bad street dancer before wanting to enter the field of science. Even Blossom, the most sanest person in the show! seems dimwitted at times.

Of course, the world would be a dull place if everyone was critical, so let me at least say something positive. Out of all of this, at least they got back most of the original voice actors like Tom Kenny and Tara Strong. I’m not sure how they did it; Tara Strong is somewhat understandable, considering she did another revised voice for the show Teen Titans Go. But Tom Kenny has much better standards! Perhaps he’s at a peak in his career considering that Spongebob isn’t doing as well as they use to.

Anyways, this is all my opinion of course, I can’t speak for the major population. I’m sure there are people out there who quite enjoyed it. If you really want to see how good it is, rent the special on Netflix and review it for yourself.
