The Russians will no longer be able to win Olympic gold due to losing to the Finnish hockey team in the quarterfinals. The Finnish beat the Russians 3-1, ensuring that at best Russia can only place fifth. This truly is a crushing defeat for Russia, being that for years the Russians were a dominant force in the sport.

Vladimir Putin, president of the host nation, was hyping up the Russian hockey team before and during the tournament. The Russian president would proclaim that he expected to see Russia in the finals. Also, he expected the Russian hockey  team to win by a large margin. With President Putin boasting, it has only added on to the crushing defeat that the Russians have suffered.
