News release on summer agriculture program

Attention high school students… the ‘Āina will be your classroom this summer!

Interested in food and sustainable agriculture? The Kohala Center will be offering two two-week paid Agriculture Internship Programs this summer for 16-19 year olds. This internship aim is to expose you to the fun and exciting opportunities that exist in local food production, and to spark your interest in pursuing the training necessary for a successful career in agriculture or a related field. We will be visiting various farms and sites in Waipi’o, Kohala, Kona, Hilo, and others on the Hamakua coast, with an emphasis on hands-on learning. We will visit successful young local organic farmers, a small bee operation, a mushroom farm, a permaculture farm, a ranching operation, go down into Waipi‘o Valley, and visit the Agricultural Programs at both Hawai‘i Community College and UH Hilo.

Two session are being offered this summer: June 16-27 & July 14-25. The deadline to apply is Monday, June 9th for the first session and Monday, July 7th for the second session. We will begin each day (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at our farm in Honoka’a. A $250 stipend will be awarded upon the successful completion of the two-week program.
