Halema’uma’u Crater

Lava Lake

Chyenne Book, Reporter

The lava in Halema’uma’u crater is slowly expanding to the rims of the crater. The crater has been erupting since Tuesday around 9:40 pm and has now expanded. The lake is activity reminding USGS Geologists of past lake activity at Halema’uma’u in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

An explosion took place on sunday due to collapsing walls at Halema’uma’u crater. The rocks over the lake were altered because of the gases coming up from the lava lake. The rocks gave away causing collapsing crater walls.Which triggered an explosion. Luckily, no body got hurt.

The splattering and popping of the burning hot lava seems like a show to visitors, but how do locals feel, knowing there is a possibility for another devastating eruption?
