Ka Leo Nā 'Ōpio

Ka Leo Nā ‘Opio is the student-produced news of Kohala High School and established as a forum for student expression.  Content should reflect all areas of student interest, including topics which may create dissent or controversy, and follow all current DOE publication guidelines.  Stories contained herein reflect the opinions of the student writers, not necessarily those of the administration or Hawaii Department of Education.  Student journalists strive to present insightful and newsworthy stories in a timely manner.

Ka Leo Nā ‘Opio accepts letters and articles for publication if they are deemed acceptable by journalism standards and the editorial staff and submitted with the writer’s name.  Letters and articles can be published anonymously upon request.

The review process is an ongoing activity to ensure quality journalism.  Staff members and the adviser will consistently review, discuss, and edit all content considered for publication.  The staff will use their best judgment to be aware of materials which “a reasonable person might construe as obscene, libelous or slanderous, or which encourage others to commit unlawful acts or violate lawful school regulations or which may cause substantial disruption of the orderly operation of a school.” (BOE Policy 4015.1)

When material becomes questionable, the staff will call an immediate meeting with the writer or photographer.  Students and adviser will work together to determine sound journalistic decisions.

Every effort will be made to ensure the accuracy of information printed.  If, however, an error has occurred, a correction will be made in the most timely and appropriate manner.

Concerns should be directed to the publication’s adviser or the principal.
